Universal Manipulation Interface: In-The-Wild Robot Teaching Without In-The-Wild Robots

Technical Analysis employs hand-held grippers coupled with careful interface design to enable portable, lowcost, and information-rich data collection for challenging bimanual and dynamic manipulation demonstrations. High-level Analogy: Imagine you want to teach a robot how to do complex tasks, like washing dishes or folding clothes. Traditionally, you either manually control the robot like a puppet (which is expensive, difficult, and limited to a specific robot in a specific lab) or show it YouTube videos of humans (which is easy, but robots struggle to understand precise human movements because humans and robots are built differently). UMI is like giving a human a pair of 'smart oven mitts' that look and act somewhat like the robot's hands. The human teacher wears these mitts and performs tasks naturally, anywhere they want – in their kitchen, at a cafe, even outdoors. These mitts have a special wide-angle camera and sensors that precisely record every movement from the robot's perspective. The system then takes these 'mitts demonstrations' and translates them into instructions the robot can easily follow, even adjusting for differences in how quickly the robot moves or its specific arm structure. It focuses on relative movements ('move 5cm forward from where you are') rather than absolute positions.
